I still use my beloved GRII which has a 28mm lens. That works for me. It's my companion for many years and I hope many more to come. Heard the rumour a GRIV would arrive this year and at the end a monochrome version. The latter will be an immediate preorder.
What a great camera. Since seeing your pics when you got it I was in love and decided to pull the trigger on the X HDF to pair with my large format system. Incredible!
Awesome! I really do wish I got the HDF one. I don’t think I’ve ever used the ND filter, but I know I would never turn off the diffusion filter. That look is great all the time and not just on the random occasion.
Just picked up the griiix yesterday. I knew I needed 40mm since I think in longer focal lengths typically. Already blown away by the images coming out of it. Great review!
I’m using gr3x for like year and a half now, and I really like it too. Till now no issues with dust on sensor, or malfunctioning wheel. Unfortunately I had several issues with firmware, and camera seems to be dead from time to time - for example - camera turned off but lens remains open, another example - everything is fine you can do whatever you want, change settings etc. but shutter button is not working. Every time removing battery for a while was the solution, but in general this is annoying a bit.
Nice review. I really didn't think I would want another camera after getting the z6/z7ii combo after selling all my Fuji gear, but I am intrigued by this camera. A friend also has one and I am so impressed with the size and images. I am glad you mentioned that diffusion filter. That was an open question for me. I like the diffused look of some images, so it seems the HDF IIIx is the right version for me. I won't get it any time soon, but it goes on the list of potential future purchases!
40 is a very versatile focal length and if you’re used to a 50, not surprised you didn’t take to the 28. I hope your wheel in back holds up, that seems to be a weak spot on these cameras.
28mm is a focal length I want to love, but have a hard time with it. I got one for my Nikon Zf that I hope grows on me. Also, I think 40mm might be my new favorite focal length! And I will be mindful of the little wheel too, thanks!
The GR IIIx is a stellar camera indeed. I own both. I suspect that if you lived somewhere else that your opinion on the GR III might change. Both cameras deliver amazing image quality. I’ve been writing photographer’s guides and don’t feel like I’m making a compromise at all! They are also great when cycling.
Great job with that camera, your photos are excellent. 👍
I really contemplated the GR series. They're great cameras but I ended up with a Panasonic GX85. Not quite as small as the GR but it does everything I wanted to do.
My two main shooters are my Fuji xt-4 and Ricoh gr3. I also love the similarity between colors. Ricoh’s size is the reason I picked it up, and it’s also the reason it comes with me everywhere.
I adore the Ricoh cameras. I snagged a GR (2013) for a great price on ebay around 2016, and then a couple years later grabbed a used GR II (2007) because it was an absolute steal. The only reason I don't shoot more with them is that my Google Pixel is such a good point & shoot camera and is obviously connected to the cloud while my old Ricohs don't have wifi.
I'm good with the 28mm, but if I come across a good price on a used IIIx, I'd pounce for sure.
I ended up selling my iii Diary edition due to the same reason, too wide, now to get the x! So compact and what quality for the price! I would get a monochrome version in s heartbeat.
Love my GR3! I like the 28 over the 40 because I’m mostly using it to take pictures in situations that I’m also a part of, not observing (dinners, parties, concerts)
I was in the same camp with the 28mm. But I’m starting to move towards the wider focal length. In my latest Substack post, I went back and looked at some old photos from 2023. I really loved the color coming out of the GRIII. And I wasn’t even using Positive Film. It was my RAW files. I think I’m going to take it out more.

Oh a monochrome one would be so cool!
Didn't know about the HDF option: thanks!

Nice! I am glad you are enjoying the GR too. Also, thanks for reading!

Go figure, I still use the GR with 28mm lens (the original GR, the first with APS-C).
stunning images
