Really well said! I think being in a place that's not traditionally known for photography (esp. within certain genres i.e. NYC/street photography) forces you to be more creative and in-tune with what's happening in your city, making you a better and more sensitive photographer.

I really like this article. You remember me one the most important things I enjoy about photography: to really open my eyes and try to see what makes unique a place or and object. Thanks for that!

Great article on embracing your surroundings and photographing the more ordinary things around us.

Having lived in Southern California my whole life it is true that we have beautiful landmarks both natural and manmade. They make up a small portion of the landscape and unfortunately they get all the attention from movie makers and photographers. lol !

Thankfully there are far more ordinary buildings around me to use as subject matter. I see in Jasons photographs things in common with my images which are taken on the other side of the country. It further illustrates the fact that there’s beauty everywhere and creates a commonality amongst our type of photography.

I have been working on a project photographing my boring neighborhood the last 5 months. You make it look easier than it is! 😆

Your post is perfect. It is exactly how I explain to my relatives and friends why I love taking pictures of everything I see in my neighborhood. There’s beauty everywhere !

Love this point of view. This piece really reminds me that there’s so much to photograph even when there’s seemingly not. Keep up the great work!

Great article.

I recently moved from Honolulu, Hawaii to Williamsburg, Virginia.

It's been hard to adjust to this environment. But finding your blog/instagram has given me a new perspective.

Valuable perspective! I don't think I live in a particular 'boring' place, but parts of it can be when you go past them each and every day to/from work for example. But I try to look past that and I noticed that over the years I more and more 'see' interesting things to photograph (alas, at least to me). I even setup a website about the Dutch province I live in (https://limburg.photo), just to give these photos purpose :)

Hi, Jason. I just want to say you have a really good eye and your photos are inspiring. For someone who knows Chesapeake or visited there will tell you captured it in an honest and unique way. My family and I lived in Elizabeth City, NC for four years and moved here in LA October last year. VA was our go to for shopping and dining. My son goes to jiujitsu class in Chesapeake so I drive there three times a week.

This is so motivating, I find myself using my boredom of the familiar as an excuse for not feeling inspired almost every day! You offer a great solution for getting out of that rut.
